Robert Gsellman? Who?

The Mets 2016 Season has had it’s ups and downs. From the injuries to the tough losses, but things have changed. The Mets currently sit on top of the Wild Card for the Postseason. And they came back with new starting pitchers including Robert Gsellman.

Now, you might be wondering, Gsellman? Huh? Who is he?

Gsellman, 23-years-old was a minor league starter brought in after another pitcher, Steven Matz went down for the Mets. He made his debut in August 2016 against the Cardinals, playing relief pitcher after Jon Niese left the game after ⅓ of an inning with an injury. He had three and a half innings of shutout baseball. Since then, he has been a truly amazing pitcher for the Amazin Mets: two wins, two losses, and a 3.08 ERA. If the Mets end up making the playoffs, he will factor into winning the Wild Card Game, the ALDS, ALCS and possibly even the World Series.

Why I like him so much is, he is like all of us. A pitcher who just wanted to play pro-ball. And unlike most of us who will not achieve our dreams, he did.

He climbed his way from the minors and when he came up for the Mets, he did not quietly into the night. He did not vanish without a fight.

He helped the Mets live on. That day, he became a New York Met.

The Mets as of, Sept. 21, are 70-61 and have the first wild card spot. They are looking pretty good for the postseason and so is Gsellman among other starting pitchers like Bartolo Colon, Noah “Thor” Syndergaard, Seth Lugo, Steven Matz and Gabriel Ynoa. Gsellman would be a great part of the Mets’ postseason picture and he would be a major contributor.

Before playing for the majors, he went to high school in West Chester, Los Angeles. He was drafted by the Mets in 2011 after college. Over his five-year career in the minors, he had 34 wins, 31 losses, 3.10 ERA and just like that, he became a major league Mets starter, and you know his story from there.

Robert Gsellman is no big-shot like Bryce Harper or  Matt Harvey or Clayton Kershaw but, did anyone know who they were at first either?  Robert Gsellman, Seth Lugo, Gabriel Ynoa, Brandon Nimmo, T.J. Rivera, Matt Reynolds, in 10 years, they will be legends.

And that’s the way baseball is, the unknown become legends like Gsellman will be one.
