What Can We Do to Support Native Hawaiians?

What+Can+We+Do+to+Support+Native+Hawaiians%3F

When we think of Hawai’i, we usually think of Beaches, Resorts, or even Moana, right? Think again. In this article, you will see the problems from the Overthrowing of The Kingdom in 1893 to The Maui Wildfires of August 2023 and the possible solutions:

The overthrow of The Hawaiian Queen in 1893 was illegal, and it was un-American for us to do that. There was not even a referendum or even a discussion. So, what would have been more useful was to hold an election and peace talks with the Native Hawaiians on whether they wanted to be Americans or they wanted to remain a Kingdom. We had no reason to interfere, and though we signed the apology bill in 1993, it was not enough.

In 2014, construction began for a telescope on Mauna Kea. This is bad because, to the Hawaiians, Mauna Kea is a sacred place where they pray at the foothills. Imagine your place of worship being demolished and turned into offices or resorts. That would not feel good, so please let us show some sympathy for Mauna Kea.

Tourism and the number of people moving in from the Mainland and Japan are two of the factors that caused Native Hawaiians to lose their beloved land.

How can Bedford Students be affected by what is going on in Hawai’i? Any of these social injustices could happen anywhere. We paid attention to the Ukraine war, and we are slowly starting to pay attention to the Palestine and Syria conflicts. So why are we ignoring this even though it is happening in our own Country? Any social injustice, big or small, is worth fighting against. These People have their own culture that is distinct from the Mainland, and our Government has recorded a history of banning it. We should present a proposition to our local Representatives and Senators to tell the Government to work on bills to help preserve and protect our only Pacific Island State. When the Legislature talks about maintaining Native rights in this Country, the tribes that they usually bring up are the Navajo of Arizona or the Cherokee living North of Dallas. How can they be so ignorant to miss this beautiful Tribe? If they can not do it, then we Citizens will help them. It is going to be a lot of hard work, but it is always worth it.
