Water We Waiting For?

4,218,737,758. That is the number of plastic water bottles ezH20 water bottle fillers have prevented people from using. We think it’s time for Bedford to purchase one of these water fountains.

By bringing these water bottle fillers to Bedford Middle School, we can save so much plastic. At “Ursus,” we strongly believe that buying these new water fountains has numerous benefits for everyone involved: Not only will we save plastic bottles, but more people will be encouraged to drink water throughout the day. Many at BMS refuse to drink from our current water fountains because they are afraid of germs. It is important to hydrate frequently, and more people will do this if they can refill their own water bottles at school. Also, these machines allow kids to see how many plastic bottles they have saved with the bottle count on top of the fountain. People love to watch the numbers go up.

Some students and teachers atBedford think that buying these water bottle filler fountains will be a waste of money because we already have water fountains; however, “Ursus” researched the cost of these machines, and they don’t cost much more than the regular ones.

According to Elio Longo, director of business operations for the town of Westport, installing an old water fountain without the refilling ability costs $900 to $1,200. The list price of a new exH2O costs $1,500. That’s roughly a $300 difference we feel should be spent to help save the environment.

Maybe if we don’t replace them all now, as a compromise, we can purchase these when the school is in need of a new water fountain.
Middlesex Middle School in Darien uses ezH20 water bottle filler fountains; Staples High School has also added these to their school.
Lots of kids are bringing reusable bottles from home and they have already saved thousands of bottles’ worth of plastic. Here at “Ursus” we think that Bedford Middle School should finally do the same.

We have to ask ourselves, “Water we waiting for?”
