On Tuesday, April 5, a curious, kinda scary, and definitely funny moment in Bedford history occurred when two “Ursus” staff members got stuck in the Bedford elevator–that’s right the school elevator.

Soo funny, but we will NOT be riding in the elevator again!

After a long day at school with our first day of Mock Trial and a hard day at “Ursus” layout, staff writers Charlotte Tirola and Emma Vannart realized that they had left some things in their locker. Deciding that they did not have the strength to walk down the stairs, they decided to use the elevator.  This wasn’t one of the best ideas they made, but what happened next has amused many.

When the girls were in the elevator, they realized that it wasn’t moving. They tried to look through the gap in the elevator, but all that they could see was brick wall. They realized that they were stuck in the middle of floors in the middle of a middle school.

Yelling for assistance did not work, so eventually they came to the idea of pressing the emergency button. People came, but not the people that they needed.  The first to arrive were 5th graders. When custodians who then arrived couldn’t get them out, the custodians told them to call the police and fire fighters from the inside the elevator.  For an hour and 15 minutes they were stuck in the elevator waiting to be freed.

Did they panic? No, they watched sad Youtube videos to make them cry hoping their parents would take pity on them and take them out for dinner.

The fire department finally came, but to get them out they had to break the top of the elevator, knocking fiberglass all over them and the floor. The rescuers put down a ladder, climbed through the shaft, and the carried them out of the elevator. They were their prince charmings.

Once out of the elevator, they girls were greeted by Superintendent Dr. Elliot Landon, fire officers, 5th graders and parents.

Charlotte Tirola and Emma Vannart stated that it actually wasn’t scary at all, if anything it was, “Soo funny, but we will NOT be riding in the elevator again!”
