Her Passion for Music

Her Passion for Music

As you already may have “heard,” eighth grader and talented flautist Sophia Lauterbach has made regionals for the past two years. She has dedicated a lot of her time outside of school playing the flute.

She currently takes private lessons and is a member of the Bedford Wind Ensemble, Norwalk Youth Symphony, and New England Summer Music Camp. She believes that, “New England Music Camp has a perfect balance between music and normal, fun camp activities.”

Believe it or not, Sophia only started playing the flute four years ago in elementary school. In fifth grade, she seriously debated between the flute and trumpet. She later decided on the flute like her grandmother who was also a flautist in her youth. However, it’s really the love of the sound that draws her to the instrument.

In the future, as a high school student, Sophia hopes to be first flute in Norwalk Youth Symphony and Staples Symphonic Band. According to teachers here at Bedford, they are going to miss Sophia and her talent. Mr. Gregg Winters, one of the Bedford band teacher says,

“Although I truly appreciate having her in my group this year, I also look forward to hearing her perform with the Staples High School ensembles in the future.”

Additionally, Mr. Lou Kitchner, the other Bedford band teacher, says, “Sophia is one of the most self driven and musically engaged students of eighth grade at Bedford.”
Sophia is truly an accomplished flautist.

It’s obvious that many of her peers and teachers enjoy her talent and aren’t afraid to show it. But you wouldn’t know this from Sophia herself. She is humble and doesn’t like to “toot her own flute.”
