Westport’s Last Winter Break

By now it is likely known that next school year, February break will cease to exist.

Many rumors have been floating around. Some say that February break will now be a four-day weekend. Others suggest that the summer will be longer. So what is really going on?

According to the “Connecticut Post,” school district schedules will align in 2016-2017, which means that February break all over the state has been shortened from an entire week to a four-day weekend wrapping around Presidents’ Day. The State of Connecticut has also stipulated that school will begin on the first day of September this year, the Thursday before Labor Day.

The [state] law allows five “flex” days with which districts can vary from their regional calendar.” It is currently unknown what Westport will do with these days; however, in past years the school district has set aside five days of the schedule for snow days, and while it is unclear where these days come from, they may be related to this law.

With this information, we know that this could only mean one thing: no more ski trips, no more week-long getaways to the sun.

The “Ursus” staff believes that February break is more than just vacation time; it is a time to recover from the past few months work. With cramming in midterms and closing the 2nd quarter, the end of January and beginning of February is considered the most stressful time of the year. We love (soon to be loved) our break.

These times of stress never defeated us because we had the thought of our break coming up. We knew that there was always going to be time to recover at the end; it was the light at the end of the January and beginning of February tunnel.

But what’s going to happen when the break gets taken away and there is no time to recover? Never getting a chance to recover the way we need to from the stress of the past month and a half, the outcome will never be good.

Here is what we would like: February break back, and if we can’t have that, then no homework over that week so we can have a little less stress.
