Fresh from his days on SNL, Fallon took the wheel from Jay Leno and Conan O’Brien, and gave “The Tonight Show,” a new look, with his witty and silly personality, and fun with celebrities in famous moments such as “Mad Lib Theatre,” lip syncing, and political humor.

Sporting Event of the Year
A tie has happened in our sports most memorable category. First, the New England Patriots won the Super bowl… again. Brady, Belichick and company won their sixth ring since 2001, this time crushing the Rams in a very boring Super Bowl, the thoughts of many said. Then, we get to what could be the greatest comeback in the history of sports, Tiger Woods. After battling problems personally and professionally, the all-time great returned to win the Masters, coming from behind to win, and allowing him to continue his chase of Jack Nicklaus for the most major championships.

“Old Town Road” has been heard being sung by tons of middle schoolers around Bedford. This song can be sung by anyone, with a section with and actual melody, followed by a rap. With its catchy lyrics and great tune, this song is the perfect mix of country music and hip hop.

Who doesn’t like a big-time superhero movie that seals a franchise? “Avengers: Endgame “broke records and broke the hearts of fans with its ending. The Avengers franchise will go down as one of the biggest ones in history and “Endgame” did not let people down with its conclusion, from big battles to big deaths, it was a final victory lap for a beloved franchise.

App of the Year
Voted as the “Ursus” App of the Year again, Youtube is perennially popular with middle schoolers. The open video forum lets kids watch videos produced by anybody, from a celebrity to an obese animated bunny. This past year, one of the biggest trends to come out of this application is the PewDiePie vs. T-Series craze, among other similarly popular videos and creators. It was the best app of this year, and probably will be for years to come.

Of all the games that have happened in recent years, “Fortnite” continues to be one of the best and most loved. This game is action packed – and its creator, Epic Games, keeps coming out with new storylines, skins, and more. The game grown very much over time and has blossomed new modes, more users, and constant map changes. This game has been an absolute hit among middle schools.

Trend of the Year
Arguably the biggest meme of the year, and without a doubt the most controversial, Youtube superstar Pewdiepie, the creator on the platform with the most subscribers, Pewdiepie has long reigned over the Youtube community. However, Indian bollywood record label T-Series has since risen to PewDiepie’s sub bot, causing the two fanbases, and unfortunately nations, to fight. Whether you say T-Series has taken the lead thanks to sub-bots, the Youtube algorithm, or that they just have better content, this has gone down into the history books, and not just those of Youtube.

TV Show of the Year
“Saturday Night Live,” One of the most legendary comedy shows of all time was voted the best TV show of the year by BMS students. Over it’s length 45-year run on Saturday nights on NBC, it has won several Emmy awards for cast members and the show itself, including for current cast member Kate McKinnon.

Meme of the Year
Big Chungus might sound differently than it seems.This popular meme actually is just a video from the 1941 cartoon “Wabbit Twouble” starring the innocent Bugs Bunny, the cartoon character first appearing in the 1940s. Bugs Bunny blows up in a way, becoming the “Big” Chungus we know. Big Chungus has been edited to appear on fake video games for consoles such as PlayStation and XBOX, and is surely one of the most popular memes of the year.

News Story of the Year
As many know, a terrible fire broke out at the great and historic Notre Dame cathedral in April, gluing people to their televisions to see what had happened to the holy Catholic cathedral and if the building would survive. Fortunately, it was able to survive but with heavy damage leading to ongoing rebuilding efforts.

Celebrity Passing
Whether you’re a fan of Marvel’s movies or comics or not, Stan Lee is a household name. Not just the creator of marvel comics along with Steve Ditko and Jack Kirby, Mr. Lee created universes, multiverses, of characters and worlds, which leapt from the pages and screens for decades. Not only did he create world famous characters such as Spiderman, Iron Man and Ant-man, he has been seen in each MCU movie since Iron-Man, his last being “Endgame.” He deserves this spot on the list, and BMS recognizes that.
