A Year in a Bottle
This is the final issue of “Ursus” for this year. So we decided to recap the entire school year and important real world events. To actually summarize all the important events in the world and our school over the last school year would take all of Ursus, and since we can’t use up the entire issue, we chose some of the most important events. And not just what the event was, but an item to represent it. So we decided to come up with some ideas for items to put in a time capsule.
Penny
The penny is made to symbolize this year’s eighth grade penny wars. For those that don’t know, while the seventh and sixth graders had the food drive, the eighth graders had the Penny Wars. The Penny Wars was a fundraiser with a competitive aspect for the eighth graders. The goal was for each pod to gain points by donating pennies to their pod, and dropping silver coins and dollars so other teams could lose points.
Paris peace attack sign
These are to represent three extremely horrible terrorist attacks that have happened over the last year. San Bernardino, Paris, and Brussels. Flowers are being used because often at memorials of horrible events people will place flowers. The flowers signify their sorrow and grief over what happened.
Yellow jewish star
After the start of the World War two, the Nazis forced all Jews to wear yellow stars so that they could be identified. This year, the eighth graders have been learning about the Holocaust. Also, Abby Weiner, a Holocaust survivor came in and spoke to the eighth graders. The star will symbolize what have learned about, and what they have heard.
David Bowie and Prince
David Bowie and Prince are two of the most well known Rock and Roll artists. Not just because of how different they acted from the rest of our society at the time. Also, they both sadly passed away over the last school year. A Bowie Album and a Prince album will serve as a way to remember two incredible musicians.
Donald Trump’s hair
This is meant to signify a crazy 2016 presidential election. We have seen some crazy things and it isn’t even Hillary v Trump yet. Also, Donald’s hair isn’t just to signify how crazy the campaigns have been, but how interesting the campaign’s have been. How many of you readers thought that Donald Trump would become the next Republican nominee? Also, there has been some crazy accusations and remarks. Ted Cruz has been accused of being the Zodiac and Canadian, Hillary has been accused of being the worst abuser of women, and Trump has been accused of well… Everything. He’s been accused of having small hands, abusing women, lying, and even being a liberal in disguise. This election is absolutely insane.
A phone with access to the internet
This is too show how important phones and the internet was too us. Not just social media, but online games and other stuff. Also, it is to show how we used social media apps and websites such as Instagram, Snapchat, and Facebook to communicate with others. Also to show how weird our society is. Some of the pictures you can find on social media, are extremely weird, and that our society is hard to understand and is flat out confusing.
Tri-fold
This is to represent the Science Showcase. Science Showcase is a giant science project that eighth graders have that lasts over a month. What happens is eighth graders choose an experiment that they can perform, and then outside of school, do it, and have to put a summary to their experiment on a tri-fold.
Can of food
Every year, the sixth and seventh graders hold a food drive right before Thanksgiving. Since the goods have to be non-perishable, most of the food is canned since that lasts longer. A can of food will remind us of the food drive that the sixth and seventh graders did to help out around Fairfield county.
Evolution from ape to man
This was chosen to represent all the changes that have happened at Bedford. For example, connections is no longer on Wednesday, and it’s on a different day each week. Another change is the gym floor. The gym floor was entirely redone. The gym floor is now gray, unlike last year. Another change is the lunch food. They added pop tarts and rice crispy treats. They also made everything whole wheat. Also, there was a lot of teaching changes. All of the pods are know different from last year.
Basketball
A basketball was chosen to represent the Warriors record breaking season. For those who don’t now, the Warriors had the best regular season record ever. The previous record was 72 wins, and 10 losses in a season. However, the Warriors beat that record and had 74 wins and 8 losses. This is huge since even getting close to 72-10 is extremely difficult, and beating it is near impossible.
Kylo Rens Lightsaber
This is to represent the release of Star War 7: The Force Awakens. This movie was one of the highest grossing movies of all time. It is also the first movie of the third Star Wars trilogy, and has lead to to the creation of several other movies such as Star Wars:Rogue One. Also, a main character from the original trilogy (Han Solo dies) meets his maker.
Muhammad Ali
Muhammad Ali, one of the greatest boxers ever died on June 3, 2016. He won three heavyweight championships in the ring. Out of the ring, he fought against social injustice. Putting him into the time capsule will be a way to remember a legend.
