Students Who Test Different Skills

An 8th grader in the air at 2016 National Championships where she placed third overall.

When people think of skiing, some kids get scared, others might get excited, but these three students jump up with joy.

Our first snowboarder is seventh grader Katie Gabriel. Katie started to snowboard at age 5. Katie has always loved the sport.

“I love the joy and the adrenaline,” Katie said, “I also love the snow.”
This year Katie enrolled in Stratton Mountain School, a boarding school where she trains in the morning, and studies in the afternoon.

At Bedford, we have academics for seven hours each day. Katie would typically have between four to six hours of academics and five to six hours of training a day. Talk about a packed schedule.

Although Katie loves the extra time on the slopes, when Katie was asked the hardest part of boarding school she replied, “It’s hard missing friends.” Katie hopes to become an Olympic snowboarder, and says that her biggest achievement winning third overall in the U.S.

Dylan Halky, our next star skier, is a sixth grader. In the off-season, Dylan devotes her time to the Westport Wreckers softball team.

“She’s a great teammate,” says seventh grader Ally Currier, “I love having her on the team.”
But when winter comes around, Dylan hits the slopes.

Dylan is on the ski team at Stratton Mountain in Vermont as well. She typically trains every weekend, and occasionally will have a competition.

When asked why she likes to ski, Dylan responded, “It’s fun and challenging. It’s hard when I fall down trying a new trick, but my coaches push me to try and get it done.” There are some star skiers at Bedford.
Seventh grader Bobby Turner is certainly a scholar skier. Bobby used to devote his weekends to his skis but this year, he bumped it up a notch.

This past year, Bobby enrolled in Killington Mountain School. KMS is a boarding school that spans from early November to April. He has to put in a lot of effort to make coming in and out of Bedford a smooth transition. But, it’s worth it to pursue the sport he loves.
As you can see, we have some talented skiers and snowboarders at BMS. I know I’m excited to see their futures unfold.

Maybe they’ll go to all-year ski school, or maybe they’ll be on the Staples ski team. Maybe they’ll grow up to become Olympians! And maybe, they’ll be like Bedford Alum, Julia Marino who travels the world on her snowboard.
