Mask Breaks when the Thermometer Drops

Mask Breaks when the Thermometer Drops

Currently, students go outside for their mask break/recess.  Recess has never been so crucial. It’s the only time of the day when students get to go outside, get some fresh air, and have a chance to take off their masks.  However, when the temperature starts to drop, indoor mask breaks will start to be necessary.

According to the BMS/CMS newsletter, it says that when the harsh winters come that students will have indoor recess in the library media center. However, later on in the paragraph it says “ Students must keep their masks on. ” This means that students will have to be inside with a mask on all day except for the quick 20 minute lunch period.

Dr. Nicole Groves spoke on ABC News and said “There are no health concerns related to the wearing of cloth face coverings for elementary and middle school students during the school day. Cloth face coverings do not impair the exchange of gases (oxygen & carbon dioxide). Students should be given breaks during the day ” Basically what Dr. Nicole is thinking is that it is fine for students to be wearing masks for a full day, but they should have mask breaks.

As the freezing temperatures arrive there will often be times that students can’t go outside for a few days. There needs to be a way for students to still get a mask break even if it means having it inside.
