Pokemon Catches Attention of Kids Everywhere

Alex Babina

Traded in the corner of the school at recess. Played on Nintendo Switches in homes everywhere. Watched on TV around the world. For 25 years the Pokemon company has printed cards around the world. Pokemon is a card game where you open packs and collect different animals with different abilities or attacks. Not only are these cards for kids, but adults love them too. Some cards are rarer than others. These cards are the most rare cards of all time. Sold for $150,100, Kangaskhan #115 F.E.T.C (Family Event Trophy Card) has only been sold 3 times in the last 2 decades making it one of the most rare cards of the last 20 years. The card dates back to the Child/Parent Mega Battle Tournament in 1998. In this tournament the teams were made up of Parents and Children and the team with the most victories received this card, the only time the card was ever up for anyone to get, having to never been mass produced. Sold for $195,000, the Pikachu Illustrator Card was originally given to winners of the 1997 and ‘98 promo contests. 39 copies were officially awarded to winners while 2 copies were later discovered by one of the creators. This brought the total number of copies up to 41, still making it an extremely rare card. This card is also unique in many ways, being the only card to say “Illustrator” instead of “Trainer” on the top of the card. Now, only 19 cards are still known to exist, but only 10 are certified by PSA, or Professional Sports Authenticator. Sold for $247,230 in April 2021, the Black Star Ishihara Signed GX Promo Card was created to celebrate the company’s president’s 60th birthday. This card shows an illustrated version of him reaching out for a Master Ball, a type of Pokeball, complete with his signature in the middle left, right above his attacks. One of the most rare and famous cards of all time, the Holographic, Shadowless Base set rare Charizard. This card is selling at $418,000 and is almost impossible to pull. This card is famous for being probably the most rare Pokemon card of all time. I interviewed 9th grader Ryan Hart of the Green Pod about how expensive or rare pokemon cards can get and he said this, “The more expensive your cards are, the better it feels. Because even if you have a card and it’s expensive, it still feels good even if you bought it.” I also asked him about what makes a card expensive and he responded with, “How cool the card looks, or the type of card. Maybe the damage it does or its health. People like the design of the card more against attack.” Pokemon collecting can be fun, exciting and joyful, but it can also be expensive and very rare, and sometimes be impossible to get. I recommend it to anyone who likes collecting or likes watching the Pokemon Anime or just wants to start something new. And if you need a quick holiday gift, I recommend Pokemon.
