A.V is working at lights, the costume department is running around with bobby pins and headpieces. The actors are getting mics strapped on and doing vocal warmups before their debut. They had worked so hard for months to perfect this show and it was finally time. An announcement came that shocked them. It would have to be canceled, because of covid-19. This is an experience so many people have gone through including me.Â
The pandemic has impacted theatre in many ways such as not being able to perform for a live audience, which is what performers thrive on. An audience gives the thrill of your hard work being appreciated.Â
Covid has left thousands of performers unemployed and searching for jobs they are not passionate about.Â
But even though there are many negatives, there have been some positives. Many unemployed performers are now doing zoom voice, acting, and audition tip classes as a way to make money while doing something they love while benefiting other theatre enthusiasts. Artists are finding innovative ways to perform e.g. Zoom sing-alongs and youtube videos.Â
They also have found ways to perform safely in person like driving in performances with masks.Â
As a person who loves theatre and loves to perform, the shutting of broadway and shows has been tough. Even though it would be awesome if Broadway and local shows were open to spread some happiness in these hard times, it’s better to be safe than sorry.Â
So just a reminder, it’s just intermission.
