21 Years of New Experiences

Mrs. Silvestro, one of the longest tenured teachers at BMS, will retire after a 21-year career in teaching, 16 of those years spent at BMS. But, we can’t forget about the fun stories and experiences throughout her long teaching career. What will she do next?

While she will probably be remembered for her career as a language arts teacher, did you know she, in her first year at Bedford, back in 2001, taught math? She did admit that during class, she favored reading to her students a lot.

One fun story was when she and the pod went on an overnight field trip to “Nature’s Classroom.” Students stayed in cabins, and Mrs. Silvestro supervised “Cabin 8” with 24 boys and one other teacher.

Some years later, Mrs. Silvestro was in Providence and a person walking past her yelled “Cabin 8!,” a reference to their time together in Nature’s Classroom.

One of her dearest friends on the staff is Ms. Karmen because they have their birthdays one day apart and at heart, she is an artist.

Mrs. Silvestro cites that they often get confused for each other. That was one of the main things she said she would miss about Bedford along with the Purple Pod and the teachers in the pod and the other LA Teachers. An interesting fact is that she also worked on the yearbook for seven years and ran the Spelling Bee for a long time.
Another fun fact is she sells and makes jewelry. She even has her own website!

Her plans after retirement include getting outdoors a lot more, exercising and riding her bike more. She wants to hike and walk more, snowshoe and spend more time with her grandchildren, cross-country ski and above all she wants to write and illustrate her books.
Mrs. Jane Silvestro will be a teacher that BMS will remember forever.
