Have you noticed anything new in the halls of BMS? Specifically by the music and art hallway? BMS has recently assigned a unisex bathroom to ensure that all who are a part of the school community feel comfortable and welcome in their surroundings.

In the last year or so, there has been a massive call for change in our immediate communities. There have been protests and many letters written to officials asking that policies be put into place to ensure equality for all, regardless of their race, gender, or sexual orientation.
Hence, this lead BMS to make the decision to install a unisex sign on the door of one of its restrooms to better support the students and staff.

This bathroom was in discussion for a long time. But on Tuesday, September 21, 2021, the sign finally went up. Mr. Don Savage, a BMS health teacher said that the purpose of the unisex bathroom was “to create a surrounding that’s comfortable for everyone. So they feel better while making the choice about which bathroom to use”.

While this topic has always been an important one for our school, the creation of the Gender-Sexuality Alliance Club has helped push the initiative forward. The goal of the GSA community is to create awareness that students may identify differently and be understanding of each other’s identities with respect. “Understanding identity and support should be normalized,” said Ms. Jessica Rabine.

The school believes that each and every student should have confidence with who they are. To ensure that they feel good, quite a few more changes are being planned by the GSA and the other school staff in the school. They think that this will make the school a better place. “I think this is a step in the right direction, to make everyone feel like they are in a safe environment,” said Mr. Savage. After all, the ultimate goal of this change is to help students figure out who they are while helping them feel comfortable and show the importance of equality for everyone.
