The Yale Spizzwinks combine great singing with fun theatrics as they perform for an eager and appreciative Bedford audience.

The Yale Spizzwinks

As most Bedford students found themselves waiting in the bus line on Friday, Oct 20, a few students made their way towards the auditorium, for an captivating performance. The Yale Spizzwinks, performed for a home visit for one of their ‘Winks. The audience was thrilled by their singing and showmanship

The crowd was filled with 7th, 6th, and 8th graders, with even the occasional parent or sibling stopping by for the free concert. From the time the ‘Winks started their march down the aisle, to the time the Harvard quarterback spiked the baby (It’s a long story!), every member of the audience was enthralled.

Among the ‘Winks was none other than Bedford alumnus Nick Massoud. Nick was asked to perform by his former drama teacher Ms. Karyn McCormick, whom he sang a song to kneeling on one knee to close the show.

Nick, a junior at Yale University, is participating as a baritone in the oldest underclassman acappella group at the school, and he serves as the business manager.

The ‘Winks gave him a treat to perform for his old school during the fall tour, and lucky for us they came. Among the fall tour includes performances in Morocco as well as Argentina.
The Spizzwinks not only date back 103 years, and they are completely self-funded. With over 15 acappella groups at Yale, this all male group accepts students from freshman to junior. They practice three days a week, two group rehearsals, and one sectional.

“Yes, it can be stressful, “ says Nick, minutes after the performance, “We do repeat a lot of songs, but even a song we performed today never heard before by an audience.”James Fiffer
